Zhackals are psionic, canine pack animals that roam their hunting grounds feeding off of the emotions of those about to die. Zhor-atuil is a large example of his species, about the size of a wolf, and sports the deep blue eyes and russet hued fur that allows his kind to blend into the sun baked deserts of Athas. Zhackals are stealthy hunters and although they make no vocalizations, they can communicate with others by means of their mindlink power and telepathy. They use these powers to great effect to psychically influence the perception and emotions of their prey with mental illusions and mind spikes.

Zhor-atuil now finds himself in a strange land struggling to survive without the support of his pack. Despite this, he revels in the thrill of the hunt for more dangerous game and has begun to develop a taste for emotions beyond the fear and anguish of the dying.
