Description
"A moment of valor shines brightest against the backdrop of despair."

---------------

Hunger loomed upon my threshold...
Twas to be a dark winter.
An act of cruelty can be an act of virtue.

--

Acts of bloodshed - the true divine labor of the Light.
Through this, we wage war on the engulfing shadow.
No greater purpose have I ever known.

Life hath no mercy for any amongst us.
I hold no trust in an easy path.

An instrument of Light - merciful, blinding.
My every step sanctifies this unholy earth.
They whisper my name and cower.

My former life - a fetter, nothing more.
No duty greater.
I know my place - and it is not the hearth.

--

Black as hate, this, the darkest of all nights.
Why now, facing death, do I crave a different life?
They know I sought only glory and blood.

Their fate remains a mystery to me.
Why did I trade her for this life? She loved me.

My reverie is haunted by things unsaid.
My wasted life - measured in steel and blood.
The pain is my penitence.

I find strength in her voice when my own wavers.
Redemption awaits at journey's end...

---------------

A seasoned soldier of faintly greying hair and grizzled countenance well past his prime, seemingly struggling defiantly against the inexorable passing of years and the toll taken upon body and mind by a lifetime of armed conflict.
A robust physique instilled by the strict regimen of a disciplined mind stands in rebellion to the weight of crushing guilt from long-festering misdeeds reflected in the dull sheen of storm-grey eyes.

A fractured mind, reshaped and rebuilt time and again through the crucible of a toilsome existence, lends the man an unpredictable mannerism.
Depending on the day, a passerby may find a righteous sword arm anchored in holy purpose, a gentle philosopher reflecting upon the untold mysteries of his existence and its hard-won lessons, or a tense, crass and erratic curmudgeon perched on the precipice of surrender to his baser impulses... or, truly, anything in between.

A wayward servant of the Light, cast adrift in benighted lands. Will he find his way home, at long last, or be forever lost in darkness?

Perhaps the worst fate of all is not to be consumed by the flame, but to drift amidst the ashes.
