At first glance, it is merely alien.
At second glance, the instincts of most creatures begin to scream. Its flesh possesses an impossible quality, smooth as polished stone one moment, slick and organic the next, catching the light with an unsettling iridescence. A crown of pale, boneless tentacles hangs where any mortal face should end, each one moving with quiet purpose rather than idle motion, tasting thoughts instead of air. They never writhe wildly; they drift with deliberate patience, as though already certain of the outcome. Then there are its eyes. Deep orange rims a black violet tinted void, its gaze impossibly focused, it does not simply look at what it beholds... it settles it's gaze upon it with the crushing certainty of a predator that has already decided the distance between hunter and prey is meaningless. There is no anger within them, nor bloodlust. Only intellect so vast and detached that your fear barely registers as more than curiosity. Its presence presses against the mind of most beings long before it crosses the room. They would find that their thoughts lose their sharpness. Their words feel borrowed. The certainty that their own mind belongs to them begins to erode beneath the weight of something ancient and profoundly foreign. It carries itself with absolute confidence, moving as though every living thing is simply waiting to realize it has already been conquered. And yet... There is an undeniable allure to the creature's terrible composure. It invades personal space with unnerving intimacy, drawing close enough that escape feels impossible, yet never appearing hurried. Every subtle tilt of its head, every measured movement of those living tendrils, carries an unsettling suggestion of possession rather than violence. It regards bodies and minds with the same detached fascination, as though either could be explored, unraveled, and claimed with exquisite patience. To meet its gaze is to feel both the instinct to flee and the dangerous temptation to linger one heartbeat longer. Many monsters inspire terror because they hunger. This one is far more frightening. It inspires the creeping suspicion that being consumed might not happen all at once. Rather, it would begin with a whisper, a touch upon the edge of your thoughts, until resistance became indistinguishable from surrender. By the time the mistake was recognised, certainty would be a distant memory, as was whose desire had led into its embrace in the first place. |
