The mage before you doesn't seem to take pride in his magic, but rather resents it. Though practicing it, he doesn't do so on purpose. The brands on his arms seemed to be arcane.

The white hair and blue eyes marks him as a moon elf. His eyes hold golden flakes while a brand just behind his left ear marked him as a slave by the drows. Escaping from the Underdark, he refuses to return there.

How Shadow magic Works:
Shadow magic is used when a mage taps into the dark spells of the planes of shadow. Wizards have a hard time mastering this spell set as it means to learn how it "feels." While Wizards tap into the weave, shadow weave is like it's name suggests. It's a version of shadows. Nearly impossible for the rational mind to "feel."

Shadow conjurations are illusions formed by shadow, where as when the actual spell is used, they hold a darker hue rather than a hue of what spell it is. This makes shadow magic very dangerous. And unpredictable.

However, shadowmancers are weakest to other shadowmancers. This is due to their binding to the shadow plane. Their souls are merged into one with their shade version. So shadowmancers have to be careful when dueling each other. If their shade version becomes under a shadowmancer control then the shadowmancer is more or less like a puppet.

Shadowmancers like Alon also have an innate ability. Their eyes are able to see the same thing a Shade sees. As that's hard to discribe for regular mages, Shadowmancers can see through disguises. Though their material plane eyes cannot. In order for this to work, however, their eyes must change into that of a shade's. Turning as black as the shadows. Magical or physcial disquises are useless before these piercing eyes. But there is always a price. Due to this, he cannot speak what race those caught in his vision are. Nor their names if he knows them during the time they're within his presance.

You're able to tell that the symbols on his arms were in drow to keep his magic from harming other drows or their ilk.
