Every High Reaches man is paired with a Bear Companion as a youth.  Together, cub and child grow into maturity, learning each other's strengths, supporting each other, sharing every aspect of the other's life.  When this rapport is broken by the Man's death, the Bear is put down as an act of Mercy.

If the Companion dies, sometimes a man can survive.  The trauma usually manifests in madness or rage, though with time and patience, the Man can recover and take another Companion.

With a close bond, it is said Man and Companion take on aspects of the other.  If the bear perishes in such a bond, most often the Clan has to kill the Man or suffer his homicidal rage.  In rare cases, this tragic event will make a Baersark... a 'Bear Cloak' in the old tongue.  The Man will skin his Companion, wearing him as a cloak, taking on deeper, more animal aspects of his slain bondmate.

Such Baersarks are feared by even the hardy folk of the High Reaches.

Baern cannot remember his name, the weak one placed upon him by his Clansmen.  Instead he has taken the persona of his slain Companion, or 'Bear' in old Reachspiel.

He is a towering man.  Nearly seven feet tall, all of it rippling musculature and solid strength.  His hairy frame is spare of fat, cut and clean, thick waisted from the use of his burly axes.  He always wears the pelt of his fallen Friend, the scent reminding him vaguely of older, gentler times.
