Rain.

It was raining when he was left at the gates of the Monastery.  Unwanted children of all types... of all breeds... were left there.  Children of rape, of brutality, even of murder.  Some whispered that they deserved their fate, born unto it even.

The Monastery took in all such children of suffering.  Their first task.  Survive.

As it was common for babes, children and even youths to be abandoned there, so was it common to find predators.  Both the two and four legged kind.

Not all survived.

As the rain softened to a light drizzle, the Gatekeeper went forth to see what had survived the night.  Various stains greeted him, not at all unusual.  What was uncommon was the single bundle left amongst those stains.  A boychild.

His dusky skin and pointed ears immediately informed the Gatekeeper of his mixed heritage.  Not a slender elf-child, obviously a half breed, most likely the product of rapine.  The babe had survived the night by not squalling like his less fortunate fellow foundlings.  Even now, he peered up at the monk will startling blue eyes, gazing at him steadily.

"Rain.", the Keeper said, both naming and accepting the child.
