In ancient times, even before Karsus' folly, Lord Thantul of Thultanthar had begun to experiment with the essence of the shadowplane. In service to Shar and himself, to prolong his own life, and the lives of these he deemed worthy, he began to test the effects of shadowstuff upon subjects, rarely volunteers, moreso political enemies and people he couldn't buy or convince.

Kharim-Akeem, a young lesser noble of Thultantar had been sent to the Elves of Myth Dannor, for diplomatic negotiations. As expected, the negotations had turned sour, given that the Netherese did not rely upon the Elves' teachings anymore, so he returned home. While he travelled by magic towards his home, blue magical fires began to burn upon the sky, exploding in waves. Green hills and blue lakes were charred, their very element drained and turned into dust and sand. Mystryl, the goddess of magic had lost control over the magic weave and soon died, resulting in all magic ceasing to exist. Weaker magical beings died, and arcane casters turned desperate. The floating enclaves of Netheril fell to the grounds, the impact killing most inhabitants.

Kharim-Akeem, still travelling by magical means, was burned and charred by the magical flames that emmited from the sudden explosion of magic, sending him straight to the plaza of Thultanthar. The enclave he had returned to, had shifted into the plane of shadow, before the cataclysm. Found by the people who were not aware of the chaos that resided now within the prime material plane, he was carried into Lord Tanthul's palace, that served as the local university of arcane arts as well. Seeing that there was no chance of tending these wounds the young Netherese had suffered from, the arcanists kept the unconscious man in an artifactial coma, induced and caused by shadow magic. Lord Tanthul however soon sensed the opportunity to test his latest progress with the science and shadow magic.

In a dark ritual, they forced Kharim-Akeem's soul to leave his body, drawn into a shadowgem, which had then been placed into a pool of shadowstuff. Days passed, as his soul was merged with the essence of Shadowfell itself, tormenting the vulnerable soul, twisting it, corrupting it, transforming it.In hellish agony, the soul then turned into an artifact itself, before it was forced into the lifeless body it belonged to. Awakening in shock, Kharim-Akeem's body itself soon began to change and twist, as the effects of his artifactial soul  transformed his body into a hybrid of shadow and human. The first Shade had been created, granting him immortality at the price of losing the ablity to feel emotions, eat, drink and touch anything, nor find refreshment by sleeping.  His mere presence affected the casted shadows around him, and even the light.
