Mai is a quiet studious girl who grew up in the confined environment of her father's household where she was told over and over again that she must be a perfect young lady so that she might marry  an important lord and thereby have some worth for her family by providing a good marriage.

Then powerful people conspired against her father and in a single night all that she had known was shattered. She and her brother escaped on a boat headed for where she knew not. But fate was not finished heaping trials on the young girl now torn from her home. The ship crashed on some rocks and her brother and all the rest were killed. Only she managed to cling to a bit of floating debris and make it to shore washed up like so much flotsam on the shores of a place called Sinifar.

She doesn't know where she is, or where here is in relation to home, only that she knows no ending of sorrow and that she must not show her pain to the world. What will become of her she does not know, but here she is.
