Karen left her home at the age of thirteen.  Her seemingly loving parents raised her for thirteen years for a very specific purpose: to be the focus of a sacrifice in the cult her parents were part of.  A celestian message came to her, and warned her of her fate.  Karen fled into the night, eventually finding shelter in the religious temples; taking up the blade in heaven's name.
