"The road to hell is PAWed with good intentions"

In the year 1203 B.U (Before Unification) the great union wars began. With the empire growing in power, as more of the weaker, close by nation would willingly join its borders to avoid the flames of war, an opposite union arose. Federation of free nation would soon emerge, opposing the idea of unity under one emperor.

The mouse empire was one of such countries that long ago joined in the empire, and currenly their province would lay deeply within the borders of the empire, since mouses were a peaceful folk that would refuse to join any conflict, and since their small strature, they were spared from such fate. They tried to remain neutral, since they didn't really care about much more then their peaceful, everyday life.

In the year 12 A.U (After Unification) the Empire would succed at unifying the continent under one banner, with most nations now serving the one Emperor. Yet one "nation" or rather race would remain outside of such influence. And not because of its military genius or diplomatic brightness, rather because the race itself seemed too barbaric, while their land provided none of interest to the empire.

The folk who lived there were ratkin people. Never unified, living in many tribes among barren wastelands, pushed there by other nations and left alone due to their current homeland being of no use for anyone. Ratkin folk were a very simple minded folk, religiously zealouse, and althought they lived in various tribes, they still worshipped what they claimed to be the only god. In the past that also seemed like the only reason for them to unify for a short moments, when they thought some of the other nation would insult their god, and some religious leader arise to form a crusade against that nation. That was always a pain, not a real threat, yet the persistent nature of Ratkin would create issues on the border.

That changed in the year 30 A.U when a new mineral was discovered. Said mineral had great magical potential, and mages from across the empire would claim that the power within those stones, even in small ammount, generated energies powerful enough to even cross dimensions. What was soon discovered was that the huge ammount of said mineral were found underneath the ratkin wastelands. That of course brought the idea to bring the ratkin into the empire, to offer them life of prosperity, enlightenment and everything else that the empire culture held dear. Alas higher ups agreed that it was pointless to do it in a diplomatic way, as such, not more then a year after the discovery was made, the armies of the empire marched through the wastelands, pacifying every ratkin tribe in their way. Even thought the ratfolk held another of their "Crusade" after a few of their tribes fallen to the empire, it wouldn't even as much as leave a dent on the forces of the empire.

In the year 32 A.U the ratkin folk were part of the empire, mines were built all around the wastelands and soon it became homes for various settlers that seeked new home or easy way to earn coin. At the same time, in the heart of the empire people started to protest against such barbaric means, claiming that ratkin folk, even if simple minded, were still sentient, living beings and now their home was in ruin. In response to that, one of the higher ups simply claimed that "Now that they are part of the empire, they can move wherever they wish" which started the ratkin exodus into the heart of the empire.

Since ratkin were such a barbaric culture that their entire culture was build on violence and religious belief, it created many potential conflicts within the empire, enough so that the entire ratkin faction was grouped up in refugee camps until emperor would make any claims what to do with the troubling race. And such decission would be made in the year 35 A.U in which it was agreed that since ratfolk are somewhat related to the mouse race, they should settle together, and they could be assimilated and acculutared with the mouse peacefulness and prosperity.

That of course didn't end well. Soon the ratfolk divided into tribes once more, treating mouses as some kind of lesser beings and casuing many inner conflicts. The ratfolk lived in their own ghettos, or in camps outside of any mouse settlements. Any protest from the mouse nation would end up as it being simply claimed to be racist prejudice against the ratfolk and their way of being.

In the year 57 A.U civil war would arise among the mouse and ratfolk, which required intervention from the empire and its army to pacify both sides.

In the year 64 A.U the mouse abondoned  their homeland and started to live in small caravans or settling among other races. Sadly for them, since they were at that point so associated with the ratfolk, they would be treated with prejudice and fear of what they might bring. And it did become a self fullfiling prophecy, since to survive the mouses started to scavange whatever they could so that their big caravan that collected whatever mouse folk were still alive, could survive among others. Whenever they came, it would be called the "Vermin locust" not openly of course, since  they were still part of the empire

In the year 64 A.U the mouse declared that their home did no longer belong to them, and since the empire would not move as much as a finger to help them, they will leave it to the ratkin, as it was basicly gifted to them by the emperor, who would not care for their loyal citizen and would rather appease barbaric brutes.

In the year 66 A.U the mouse would form their land fleet of caravans and soon would travel around the empire in hopes of survival without any stable way of earning food, income or other resources. At that point it would be pretty common to hold a prejudice against mouse on an equal level as the ratkin, since the two were basicly looked upon as the same from the other races. "Vermin Locust" would be the spiteful name, never would it be said openly however.

This slowly leads us to "The vagabond mouse" or rather "mouses" since its a term used for a certain group. After the caravan was formed, group of scouts would be made to ensure that the caravan would move swiftly and as efficiently as possible, to not waste the supplies they already had. By the year 102 A.U those scouts would become "Mouse rangers" and further in time would they be called "Vagabond mouses". The name came by accident, after one of the rangers didn't like the term, and in order to answer some questions he claimed to be "A vagabond mouse". Yet the name would stick up to this day.

Their duty would be to scout out potential places to settle for the time being, natural resources they could easily scavange, or places they could find timely employment to be paid by coin or in resources. They would of course follow the unofficial rangers code of helping anyone in need, yet to meet a vagabond mouse was a  gamble, since people still kept in mind the main reason they are out in the world "to seek and scavange resources for their fleet".
