Once upon a time, an infant girl was stolen from her crib by a wicked fairy.  This was the fashionable thing for a fey to do but once they had the child, they had no idea what to actually do with it.  Raising her basically as a pet, the child grew up with little knowledge of the real world.  When she came of age, they decided to send her back to the human world to find her destiny (also because she was now a hundred times bigger than them, and they were tired of feeding her).
