 Born to a human prostitute in Luskan, The City of Sails, Kurkek spent most of his youth roaming the streets with gangs after the age of six. Orphanned when his Mother was found floating off a dock with her throat slit one night. Being larger than his rivals on the streets, even at a young age, Kurkek naturally rose to be their leader.

 At the age of twelve, tired of being chased by guards and ships crews alike, he took a job in a warehouse near the docks. Already the size of most grown men, he worked there for two years loading and unloading crates until the day Captain Jakob noticed him during a delivery and made him an offer to sail upon the "Frost Minnow".

 Though only fourteen when he went to sea. his size and strength along with his intelligence and natural curiousity had him move up the ranks quickly. Impressed by the half-ogre, Captain Jakob spent evenings teaching him to not only navigate with charts and take sightings at sea, but he taught him to read.

 Kurkek came to the Sinfar Isles as a second mate on the "Frozen Minnow". After his second shore leave here, he decided the bawdy isles would make a good home, even if only until the sea's beckoning drew him back.
