Naomi

Portrait
Description
Naomi is Livia's nemesis, motivated by a desire for revenge for the suffering Livia has caused in her own dark past. Before Livia reforms, she was responsible for the death of Naomi's family when she had her army torch Naomi's village, Sabine.

Naomi, a child at the time, was left traumatized by the attack and eventually went insane and became obsessed with getting revenge on Livia. She displays signs of bipolar disorder and psychopathy, manifested in a bizarre brand of sadistic, gleeful, shrieking cruelty towards Livia and her associates.

Naomi intends to make Livia suffer as much as possible rather than killing her, and repeatedly lets chances to kill Livia pass by. This is reflected in Livia's own feelings of guilt that cause her, on several occasions, to spare her enemy's life as well.

Naomi feels constant emotional pain, caused by the loss of her family; she thinks that if she takes revenge, she will be free of the pain. By surrounding herself with her own evil, and feeding her hatred with guilt, she only increases the pain; by seeking revenge, she traps herself in a downward spiral that prevents her from healing. Exhibiting a classic martyr complex, she justifies herself by blaming her evil on Livia, and refuses to take responsibility for her own actions. Occasionally she tries to discuss the issues, perhaps hoping for another way out, but finds only Livia's watchful scepticism of her motives.

Vengeance

Naomi's first two encounters with Livia have expressed themes of hatred, revenge and guilt, and pose the ethical dilemma of how Livia can never put right the damage of her evil past. If she lets Naomi live, she will wreak havoc, kill and maim people. But if she kills Naomi, she is merely finishing the job which she started when she wrecked that little girl's life.

Naomi was recruited into a small army and spent her days training hard with them until she was as good as Livia. She began her campaign of revenge by raiding and burning villages and savagely slaughtering people in Livia's name. She Bethanyd to revive Livia's reputation as a villain; planning to kill Livia after destroying her reputation.

Livia had no choice but to engage with her, and in a close fight Livia beat her, but could not kill her. She handed her over to the authorities, who threw her in jail.

However, Naomi later escaped, weaponless, easily crippling and killing her guards. She found Livia, but was still unable to defeat her, and instead made her suffer by plunging her sword though the heart of Agrippina's recently-wedded husband, Tiberius. Livia caught her again, but was wracked with guilt as Naomi taunted her about her past.

A fight ensued, and Livia and Naomi fell into quicksand. Livia's inventive wit allowed her to strugglefree, and she watched doubtfully as Naomi was sucked under. But the ethical dilemma still hung in the balance: Livia had killed the monster that she created, but still carried the guilt that it was all her fault.

Naomi, worked with Bane, to invade Livia's dreams and switch bodies with Livia, so that she is free and Livia is trapped in Hell. But Livia persuaded Shar to let her return to earth, although still trapped in Naomi's body, where she defeated Naomi and sent her back to Hell.

Immortality and godhood

Naomi again escapes from Hell by making a deal with Shar. Shar allows her back to Earth for one day to kill Africanus, and promises her immortality if she succeeds, but Naomi plans on getting immortality regardless. She poisons Africanus' family, then tricked him into accompanying her to the Tree of Life, where one bite of a golden apple cures all ills, and a whole apple makes a person immortal. Africanus reluctantly agrees, but Naomi traped him, and used him to reveal the tree and eats a golden apple, becoming immortal and restoring her sanity. Africanus escapes and fights Naomi, inadvertently scarring her in the process, and breaking her sanity once again, and traps her in the Labyrinth. Frustrated, Naomi has only her rage to console her for what appears to be an eternity inside the ruins.

When an Amazon called Octavia eats Ambrosia and becomes a goddess hellbent on killing Agrippina, Livia makes a risky deal with Naomi. She offers Naomi a chance at the Ambrosia in exchange for her help. Livia tricks her into fighting Octavia for the Ambrosia on a rope bridge over a river of molten glass, where she is defeated. In her moment of glorious godhood, Livia cuts the ropes and Naomi and Octavia plunge into the molten glass.

Naomi is later freed from the molten glass by Agrippina's evil daughter Bethany, who calls her "the monster lady".In a ploy of mythical proportions, she causes Bethany to kill Livia's son Minicius, and laughs manically as Livia and Agrippina's friendship is torn apart. However, Livia defeats her and traps her in a mine by causing a cave-in. Naomi then appears to Livia and Agrippina as a manifestation of their own guilt in the musical episode where they eventually reconcile.

Bethany later frees Naomi from the mine in an episode of Africanus: The Legendary Journeys. Bethany sends her back in time to destroy Africanus and also gives her the Fiend's blood. Although she fails to kill Africanus, Naomi uses the Fiend's blood to kill Strife. During her time travel, it turns out that the adult Naomi killed her own father accidentally while trying to protect her family from Livia's army, and then filled with sadness and regret went on to kill her mother as well, and then left the "young Naomi" in the burning wreckage. But Julius also traveled in time and stopped Naomi from returning to the past, making it so that the event never happened in the first place. At the end of the episode, she is trapped in an interdimensional pocket. She then escapes from this prison right before the events of Sacrifice and the rebirth of Bethany .

By this time, Naomi has had enough of the emotional pain that has tormented her since childhood. Bethany spins a cocoon around herself for her transformation from child into adult. Naomi agrees to protect her until she hatches, in exchange for permanent oblivion. When Agrippina sacrifices herself to destroy Bethany, Naomi changes her mind and gleefully exclaims that she has a reason for living again. However, it proves to be a moot point, as seconds later Livia in her furious torment mutters, "No more living for you" and slays Naomi with the Fiend's Blood Dagger.

Damnation and redemption

Stripped of her powers as a goddess, Naomi is condemned to eternal torment as a demon of Hell. She is, however, given the opportunity to return to the living if she can corrupt Livia and install Won-Shu as emperor of Kara-Tur. She is required to do this without hurting Livia physically, but as a result of her blind rage for Livia she fails at both tasks. She defeats Livia for the only time, by breaking her spine with Livia's own staff. Naomi is returned to Hell, but her actions set into motion the events leading to Won-Shu's, Livia's and Agrippina's deaths. Livia lies critically injured on the ground and Agrippina tries to defend her, but they are captured by the Kara-Turian guards. As Won-Shu declares himself emperor he is murdered by his peers, Livia and Agrippina are crucified at Won-Shu's command.

After her death, the angel Livia encounters the demon Naomi. As an act of redemption for her own guilt at Naomi's suffering, she purges Naomi's guilt, brings her back to the light. Naomi is lifted up and becomes an angel, utterly devoid of the pain and torment that she had always known, and in exchange, Livia is turned into a demon, sacrificing her own eternal happiness to save her.

The angelic Naomi

The sacrifice of lives and souls is a recurring theme. Livia frequently tries to sacrifice herself for redemption, and this is partly what gives her such fearlessness in the face of death. But this sacrifice for Naomi has its own unexpected rewards, as Livia is later resurrected by the power of Tyr, acting through the angel Naomi. Naomi now exudes such light and goodness that even Agrippina cannot believe it.

Soon after Livia and Agrippina are resurrected through Eli's efforts and Naomi's spiritual aid, Livia
