Faraj is the son of a noble minotaur lord and a Dao mistress, who was, in theory, intended to strengthen the ruling family branch's bloodline through a connection to the elemental plane of earth. In practice, he was taken in - or stolen away as a baby - by the oppressive Dao, who had other plans for him. His mixed heritage gave him strength and fortitude, but also tempered some of the hot-blooded minotaur anger that was within him. He gained a somewhat more slender and delicate frame, and developed the features of a great, horned, ashen-skinned man. His hide was almost as rough as iron, and yet he gained a fairness to him that gained him certain favors with his captors. To them, he looked somewhat like a lovely sculpture, but that was perhaps the fullest extent of their liking to Faraj. Though he had Dao blood, he wasn't truly one of their ranks and so he was snubbed at best, and at times treated as little more than one of their slaves, destined to dig endless tunnels in a world made up of countless layers of minerals. Under their tutelage, Faraj became a studious man, and through the books his captors/family brought him, he learned of the material plane and his heritage - and always yearned to explore it. When he came of age, he proved himself as a firm slavemaster to his family, and so he patiently awaited. He used their trust, and anticipated the opportunity. When a visit from a great Saltan (get it? salt?) into their own neck of the depths came, he knew his presence at their reception wouldn't be tolerated, and so he took his belongings - and used the Saltan's own planar-travelling equipment to steal away. In retrospect, this was his minotaur blood in him suggesting this impulsive decision. He may have achieved his goals, but he would be forever hunted.
